So many of the families we help these days are behind on their rent, and the majority of them are behind because of job loss, reduction of hours, or loss of hours due to being quarantined all due to COVID. Once one member of the family contracts the virus it is necessary for the entire family to be quarantined for at least two weeks. It is rare that the employee is paid any compensation at all for the time lost at work.
Annie works as a pizza delivery driver. She used to work 6 days per week and with salary and tips had no trouble meeting expenses, however her hours were reduced from 6 days/week to 3 days/week in December. While she was told her hours would return to normal in February, the loss of hours in January made it impossible for her to pay her rent due February 1. We helped her with both her rent and water bill for that month and hopefully she will be back on track for March.
Steve was laid off from an oil company last August and was able to get a job with the city. While his salary was less than half of what it was before, he was happy that this new position offered the job security that his previous job did not. But then his youngest child was diagnosed with COVID and the entire family was quarantined for two weeks. Because of that neither he nor his wife, who also works, received a paycheck for those two weeks, which was enough to put them in a bind. We were able to pay their mortgage to keep him from falling further behind.
A pastor of a very small church in east Midland was unable to pay the electric bill for the church. His major investor had moved back to Oklahoma due to the depressed oil economy and he lost many of his congregation due to COVID (people avoiding crowds). We brought the bill current.
These are just 3 of the 36 families we assisted with rent this past week, and we owe it all to you who have so generously supplied the funds to allow us to do so. Thank you so much!
